Rain, Roots, and What's Still Growing

July 5, 2026 · Forest Sanctuary

Heavy rain and flooding this week, but the garden keeps going. Sunflowers, amaranth, squash, celosia, and hollyhocks are thriving in the wet.

We've had a lot of rain this spring, and this past week brought heavy flooding to the area. Many of our neighbors' basements are under water, and our hearts go out to everyone drying out right now. We're grateful for the new sump pump and waterproofing we put in the basement last year — it's helped preserve the chapel as the weather keeps showing its teeth.

The strange weather is going to affect how the seeds come up this year, but gardening is all about trust — trusting the cycles and the seasons as they come. So we keep tending the little ones and seeing what likes all this wet.

Right now the winners are the sunflowers, the amaranth, and the squash. The celosia is putting on a show in deep red, and the hollyhocks around the chapel are just out of control — in the best way.

A reminder to everyone: you can still be planting carrots and hot-weather greens every few weeks, even in July. Most of the main planting is finished, but there's always room for one more round.

This is our first post here, but we'll be adding some from seasons past soon. Sending love to all our neighbors as we dry out together.
